Las Conchas Arcoiris

Students tasted conchas while learning about the interesting history of these traditional sweet buns. They then watched the Netflix documentary called “Divina Gula.” The documentary features Camila Garcia, a transgender activist and baker who, along with her gay brother, invented rainbow conchas to raise awareness about gay and transgender issues. Students learned more about Camila Garcia by reading newspaper articles about her and about her work. Students then had the opportunity to interview Camila Garcia live in a special Zoom meeting. They asked questions ranging from transgender rights, and healthcare benefits for transgender women in Mexico, to Camila’s relationship with her family. She explained how rainbow conchas have helped her to spread awareness about LGBTQ+ issues in her small community in Guanajuato, Mexico, and throughout the country and the world. Camila also spoke at length about the lives of transgender women and the issues they face. To end on a very high note, students, with the help of Chef Jaz, baked delicious rainbow conchas for themselves and the community. Students enjoyed every part of this project, learned about important community issues, and increased their Spanish proficiency. ¡Qué rico! Click here to view the photo gallery.
