    TOPIC SELECTION

    Do not settle on a single topic right away.  Explore the resources with a few different topics in mind.
    The most difficult data to find will probably be the "trend" data (for a line graph.)  Try locating that information first.  If you cannot satisfy that requirement, consider change or modify your topic.

    SUGGESTED KEYWORDS

    Here are some keywords that you might find useful when trying to locate information via a search engine:
    statistics, almanac, facts, fact sheet, trend, yearly, quarterly, annual, annual report, survey, poll, organization(s), association(s), records, union(s)

    SEARCH ENGINE TIPS

    Boolean Operators - AND, OR, NOT (in Google, AND is implied; OR can be used; and NOT is represented as a minus - sign), and "QUOTATION MARKS" (Phrase search.)
    Sample Search String: thor "opening day" sales -"the dark world"

    A USEFUL DATABASE
    Search for specific companies for sales figures, employee trends, comparison charts of different companies, and information without specific industries.

    If your result contains a Research Starter, you should definitely read it in its entirety and also click on links to other articles about connected characters or events.

    If you see that some of the results are not really on target, you should use BOOLEAN OPERATORS (AND, OR, NOT, "") to fine tune your searches.

    Further limit your search results by using the limiters on the sidebar.  One useful option is to limit your results by Publication.

  • Research the T.I.G.E.R. Way!

    At Dalton, we use The T.I.G.E.R. Research Process when conducting Researches.

    T = Topic Questioning
    This is a period of time that is set aside to brainstorm ideas and ask the big questions to give the research a focus -- in groups or by individual students.

    I = Identify and Evaluate Resources
    Each researcher has to both identify the relevant sources and also evaluate such sources for their validity, authority, and timeliness.

    G = Gather and Cite Information
    This is the phase of reading, watching, listening, note-taking, source-recording, etc.

    E = Express your learning!
    The researcher synthesizes and organizes all the gathered and verified information for the final product: be it a paper, a documentary film, or any other kind of project.

    R = Reflect and Revise
    The researcher revisits various stages of the research process to refine and revise the final product.  The researcher also evaluates the process and notes points of improvement for future research projects.
